Why it’s HorroRated

Saw 3D marketed itself as the franchise's final chapter and largely delivered exactly the diminishing returns that promise implied. Sean Patrick Flanery's Bobby Dagen is a hollow protagonist by design, a fraudulent self-help guru whose punishment feels more mechanical than earned, and the film leans on the gimmick of its 3D presentation more than any actual escalation in tension or craft. Cary Elwes returning as Dr. Gordon from the original film is a genuine highlight and briefly recaptures some of what made the series work in the first place, but it's not enough to elevate a plot this thin and this rushed. The Hoffman-versus-Jill storyline finally resolves the thread the previous three films had been building, and the ending does provide some closure, but everything leading up to it feels like a franchise running purely on inertia. Curious for the sake of franchise completion, nothing more.

Synopsis

Jill Tuck goes into protective custody after Hoffman survives Jigsaw's final test for him and immediately turns his attention toward hunting her down for revenge. Meanwhile, self-proclaimed Jigsaw survivor and bestselling author Bobby Dagen gets abducted and forced through his own series of tests designed to expose his fraudulent story and save his wife and friends. Kevin Greutert directs the franchise's marketed conclusion with a 3D gimmick and a returning Cary Elwes as Dr. Gordon, finally resolving the Hoffman and Jill storyline that had carried across the previous three films.
